OtoplastyOtoplasty is one of the most common operations in plastic surgery performed in order to correct irregular ear shape. About 90% of patients with this aesthetic defect sooner or later come to a plastic surgeon. So-called personal "record" belongs to the patient, who decided to do that when he was 48 years old.

Underlying cause

The first signs of excessive attention from peers as well as mockery start quiet early, usually in kindergarten. However, the question rises sharply when the school starts. If a child has already realized their physical defect, it would be useful to eliminate it as soon as possible. But keep in mind that most of the children happily "skip" this age and the next problematic stage is likely to occur at the age of 13-15, in the puberty period. Adolescents start to have interest in opposite sex and - as a consequence - to their own appearance. Such patients form the largest group according to the number of operation requests.

Another "stage" of interest in this problem usually happens between 21-28 years. At this age, young people become independent and able to address these issues on their own. Public opinion plays a great role in an inferiority complex formation. Calm attitude to this aesthetical defect from the side of family and friends helps a person to accept their disadvantage, but just one snide remark can change everything and make this person make an appointment with a plastic surgeon.

Parents should pay attention to the inadmissibility of the child’s inferiority complex formation within a family. The operation can be performed starting from the age of 8-9. At this age, the ear cartilage has already grown up to 95% of the possible size, so no secondary deformations associated with the operated tissues growth delay aren’t likely to occur.

However, despite the strong desire of parents to correct the appearance of the child as soon as possible, one should mind that the only positive motivation for otoplasty surgery should be in the mind of the young patient and should independently lead him to the operating table. It will allow performing the operation, without general anesthesia, under local anesthetic.

There are lots of surgery techniques for protruding ears correction. However, not all of them fulfill all the basic tasks of otoplasty, such as:

  • Natural look of the ear in the late postoperative period,
  • No visible traces of the operation,
  • Fast and reliable healing with no recurrence
  • Ability to obtain any desired ear shape.

In my opinion, the method I use fulfills all the tasks of the successful operation.

The extent to which the ear is protruding depends on the degree of the weakened tension of the anterior cartilage surface, which is called antihelix, as well as on the distance from the antihelix to the "bottom" of the ear. Bringing these parameters to normal values provides a natural ear contour and shape.

During the preparation for the surgery a brief examination is carried out.

The essence of otoplasty is to reduce tension in the anterior surface of the cartilage, what allows the ear to take the desired shape easily. Fixation of cartilage in the new position is performed without tension using several nonabsorbable sutures. All the incisions used for access are sutured up with absorbable fibers. It requires no procedures of removal, and in this case a patient has to wear a bandage just for 4-5 days.

Slight bruising and swelling will disappear in 7-10 days, no additional treatment is required.
